Q: Long boot up and white lines flashing across screen

After booting up the iMac normally it took an excessive time to boot up, once it did it got to the lock screen with white lines flashing across the screen. It also had Safeboot in red in the top right corner. I log in and the lines continue. The mail app is not functioning properly and the dock bar is a thick white instead of translucent. What can i do to fix this issue?

iPad, iOS 5.0.1, null

What version of OS X is installed on the computer and which model iMac do you have. Without providing the basics it is tough to assist you.

Good don't NEVER install any of that stuff, it's worthless and creates more problems. Please run an EtreCheck report of your system and post it in the reply. We can look for obvious issues and see if we can spot anything.

Well I don't see anything obvious, however I see you don't have Time Machine (backup app) configured. If you are operating any computer without a backup plan this is extremely dangerous and will eventually result in a loss of data. I would urge you to get yourself a good qualify EHD and begin using Time Machine immediately.

Because I don't see anything obvious the only other tool I can suggest is running Apple Diagnostics which is explained in Using Apple Diagnostics - Apple Support. If errors appear this indicates a hardware fault and the machine needs to be taken in for repair. Even if nothing comes up, the machine is still covered by warranty I believe and if you purchase AppleCare (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) then you can call AppleCare and they can give you some help too.

    Good luck.

Absolutely, TM will backup EVERYTHING that is on the computer not just files that you remember to copy.

If i wish to back things up but then not have them on my computer for space reasons, for example podcasts and photos will it be fine to use tim machine?

No, if you want to store large libraries such as music, photos or movies they should be on their own EHD. When you get a second EHD for your Time Machine backup, you can configure TM to backup not only your internal HD but the external too so everything has a backup. This is a good start to a backup plan.

You are getting the usual results of posting "etrecheck" stuff on this site.

An unintended safe boot can result from a stuck shift key on the keyboard, or from a Bluetooth keyboard that isn't powered on during startup. If you have an Apple wireless keyboard, press the power button on the side before pressing the power button on the computer.

If there's no change, try another keyboard.

As a last resort, follow the instructions linked below:
