Q: OS X Server 4.1.3 Upgrade Stalling / Not Starting

Hi,

Currently running OS X 10.10.4  (Build 14E46) with OS X Server 4.1 (Build 14S1092)

App Store tells me there is an update to OS X Server 4.1.3.  Clicking on "Update" button next to that item in App Store / Updates I get a spinning "wait" in top left of the App Store window - and nothing else.

If I go to AppStore "purchases" and click update against OS X Server I am prompted for my appleID, then the update button changes to "pause" with the word "waiting" to the left of the button, and the spinning "wait" in top left of the App Store window.

Then I see the 198Mb download try to start - then an error message "OS X Server failed to download  Use the Purchases page to try again". (see image below) Clicking on I see in red next to the "update" button "An error has occurred.  If I try again I just get the spinning "wait" in the top left of the App Store window - no sign of the download starting, just permenany spinning "wait" in the top left of the  App Store window.

Screen Shot 2015-07-11 at 11.41.36.png

I've used Activity Monitor to kill all the "store*" and "softwareupdate*" processes and this makes no difference. Same error.

Installing other recent updates (Digital Camera RAW upgrade) works without problems.

How can I successfully download and install OS X Server 4.1.3?

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.4.4), OS X Server

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    Select

              /var/log â–¹ install.log

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View â–¹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen. The contents of the log will appear on the right. Each log message begins with a timestamp. Select the messages from the time of the last installation or update attempt. If you're not sure when that was, click the Clear Display button in the toolbar of the Console window and then try the installation again. Select the new messages that appear. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. You may need to use a text editor with search and replace, such as TextEdit.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Here is the output from var/install.log.

I used Activity Monitor to stop "store*" and "softwareupdate*" processes.

I used App Store / Purchase and clicked on "update" next to OS X Server.  I got the error message shown in the screen shot in the original post.

As far as I could tell a message appeared in install.log when I started the update process, but nothing additional appeared when the error message appeared.

I should mention this is running on a recent MacMini.  It was a clean install of OS X 10.10.3 and OS X Server 4.1 within the last 4 months, and I have only installed 10.10.4 since then.

This procedure will delete certain temporary and cache files used by system processes. The files are automatically generated and don't contain any of your data. Occasionally they can become corrupt and cause problems such as yours.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    /var/folders/zz

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services â–¹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with a subfolder named "zz" selected. Move that subfolder to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go â–¹ Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

I followed the instructions - but couldn't completely empty the trash after reboot.  Some of the files were "in use".  Can provide a list if important.

I tried to do the app store / purchase / upgrade even though not all the files had been deleted and got a different failure error message from the earlier one.  AppStore  prompted me for my AppleID and password then after a short wait (<10 seconds) the error dialog appeared: "The server gave an error during download: 503 Service Unavailable.   Service Unavailable".  Cancel / Retry buttons.

The var/log/install.log from the time of reboot to this error message appearing is below.

Clicking on "retry" gives the same error message after <10 seconds but no new entries in var/log/install.log

Could the error message at Jul 15 20:04:07 regarding a "certificate error" be the root cause?

It doesn't look like you did what I suggested. You have to move the entire "zz" folder to the Trash, then restart, then empty the Trash.

    Linc,

    Really appreciate all your help.

    As I explained above

To be clear I put the folder zz in the trash, I emptied the trash; some files in zz folder couldn't be deleted since they were in use.  I rebooted.  I emptied the trash again after reboot and some of the files in the trash were still in use!

I'm logged in as an admin user; should I use terminal and "su rm -r /var/folders/zz", reboot and then try the update again?

I never recommend using the shell to delete files. Drag the new zz folder to the Trash, but do not empty. Restart in safe mode. Then, and only then, empty the Trash. Restart as usual.

Sorry Linc - restarted in safe mode - sudo nvram boot-args="-x" - and still same files/folders in /var/folders/zz were "in use" - so I couldn't empty the trash.

    What's next?

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.

Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups. If you upgraded from an older version of OS X, you'll need the Apple ID and password that you used, so make a note of those before you begin.

When you restart, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup.

Wow really?  This doesn't sound right - way too drastic given I only have one small problem downloading from the AppStore one application (other things are downloading / upgrading fine and I have no other problems with any other applications)

Given the error message is a download problem and its reporting that that there is a problem with fetching the update from Apple's servers it seems very odd that the next thing to suggest is a full rebuild.

Linc - you appear to be saying my whole OS X 10.10 Server 4.1 machine has become so badly corrupted in the <6 months since I did the clean install that I need to restart again from scratch.  Is that right?

If you have a better idea, please implement it and post your results so others can benefit. Otherwise, contact Apple Support and follow their instructions (which will be the same.) Good luck.
