calling or receiving calls no longer working apple watch

On the phone with apple support right now. My Apple watch no longer can make or receive calls. It was working fine until the latest iOS upgrade on my paired iPhone 5. On hold right now - for a "senior advisor." It's a long wait... I have missed several calls since this problem started - I was routinely relying on getting calls on the watch until now. -- UPDATE -- The advisor at Apple support had me unpair and re-pair the watch to the phone. This actually works! It is still weird and unsatisfying that people are reporting the problem online and their is zero response from Apple about it. It's almost like they have already given up on the product early in the game ....
