Dim light on magsafe charger on macbook pro 2009 and won't power on.

Hi. I am trying to get a macbook pro 2009 going for a friend. It has no liquid damage and has been well looked after. He said that his daughter was watching a movie on it the night before and it was working great, then, the next day he went to turn it on and it wouldn't power on at all. I have had a look at it and noticed that there is a faded green light on the magsafe charger when connected to the macbook. I have tried all different button combinations and have checked the logic board and it looks fine. I have even taken the magsafe connector off my macbook and tried it in the macbook pro and still get the same result. I have also tried to jump start the board and still get nothing. i have gone over the board with a voltmeter and it all seems good. If anyone can give me any advice i will be extremely grateful. Thanks.

There is a possibility the magsafe-board (DC-in Board) may have failed; if so that would

be a service repair or perhaps to use an iFixit.com repair guide for that model MacBook

may be helpful. Sometimes, after an installation of a replacement of such a part may not

make a difference in the symptomatic outcome. If so, there would be more troubleshooting

and repair or other parts needed.

Also if the battery has seen significant cycles of discharge + recharge, or if the battery

has been run flat more than a few times, it would be unable to retain a full charge later

and that would lead to premature failure. Other conditions of use may shorten its life too.

On models with user-replaceable batteries, they are easier to troubleshoot and also to

perform certain system resets, compared to others with batteries that are difficult to

remove and replacement may require a service technician, or ordering replacement.

In regard to this, note the Reset SMC support link above, for portable Macs.

And if available, you could inquire of an official Apple Store with genius bar, of how

to set up an appointment to have someone look into this to see what the problem is

and usually an inspection and preliminary testing does not cost. However if there is

not Apple Store with genius bar, you could ask an Authorized Apple service provider

about general or specific testing, shop estimates and other repair/restore services.

In any event...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
