OS X 10.6.8 and Safari

My wife"s macbook (an older model--macbook 7,1) had been having issues with Safari not loading pages. My error, i deleted it thinking I could reinstall it. However, I'm having a problem finding a downloadable version of Safari for 10.6.8. Tried upgrading to Yosemite, but an error came up saying the HD needed to be either reformatted or set to journaling. I set the HD to journaling, but it didn't work. Downloaded and installed Safari 8.0.6, but it says I need OS 10.10. Any thoughts on how to get the right version of Safari would be greatly appreciated.

Mac OS 10.6 and its associated version of Safari are now obsolete and are no longer supported by many web sites.

You have two options:

1) Upgrade to the current Mac OS version 10.10.4 using Software Update. That model supports the latest Mac OS version. If you have less than 4GB of RAM, you will need to add RAM first. The experience shown in these forums is that, in the real world, you need a minimum of 4GB RAM for OS 10.10 in spite of what Apple says. That model officially handles up to 8GB RAM and, with newer compatible modules made since Apple engraved the specs in stone, can do up to 16GB. If her computer usage is light-weight programs like browsing, e-mail and the like, 4GB will work. However, More is better.

IMPORTANT CAUTION: OS version newer than 10.6.8 cannot run older software like AppleWorks and any version of Microsoft office older than Office:Mac 2008. If you rely on old programs, either be prepared to upgrade/replace them with newer versions, or see my #2 below.

2) If you do not wish to update the Mac OS or cannot update due to needing old programs to a current level, switch browsers. FireFox still supports as far back as 10.6.8 and is regularly updated, something Apple does not do with old Safari versions. Get FireFox here:

It is very good browser.
