Q: How to set Display Settings from iMac vs MacPro after cloning?

Hi,

I recently lost the use of a Software App after a power outage. The App was left open and on pause while the Mac was on Sleep mode and after the power outage, the MacPro needed a reboot and the App would no longer open. I tried looking for the installation CD but could not since it was lost in my recent move.

I proceeded to use Super Duper to clone my iMac to clone it onto a spare internal HDD in the MacPro since it also had the App I needed. After it was done and I booted into the newly created OS on the spare HDD, I noticed that the icons all look bigger since the iMac screen is lager (its resolution is higher) than my MacPro monitor.

Display settings for the iMac is 1920 x 1080 vs MacPro monitor is 1680 x 1050.

I tried modifying the settings in the cloned OS via the spare HDD but they are already on 1680 x 1050 but the icons still look bigger and when I open App pages, they are bigger than normal.

Does anyone have a solution?

Rio.

    Hi RioCreations,

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

If I understand right, things look bigger on your Mac Pro after starting up from a disk cloned from your iMac. It sounds like after booting the Mac Pro, you changed the display resolution in System Preferences from 1920x1080 to 1680x1050 to match the resolution of the Mac Pro monitor.

Try using these steps to reset the resolution on the Mac Pro from Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays.

If you experience a black screen, or otherwise have an unusable picture after changing to some resolutions, try resetting the NVRAM first.

If you continue to experience the issue, startup the Mac in Safe Mode. Delete the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist file and restart the Mac.

    Best Regards.

Are you using a system which was on your Mac Pro on your iMac as the boot system for the iMac?   They operate on different graphics drivers.     You really need to use the Migration Assistant to migrate data from one Mac to another, only after installing a erase and installed copy of the operating system on the Mac that does was the destination, and only after making a clone of the original Mac.

What OS version are you using on the Mac Pro?

It may be wise to reinstall OS X since you have cloned from a system that is incompatible. The machine has specific drivers as may not work on another model.

If you still have a copy of the original Mac Pro OS it would be safest to restore that & then run the correct OS installer. That will write the OS files (including the App store). Recent OS X versions 'reinstall' by default, that leaves third party apps & your data intact, but recreates the system files. Older OS's do not reinstall by default, so take care if you are on 10.6 it may erase & install.

Thanks for replying and apologies for my late response.

I had already tried what you suggested beforehand but it did nothing.

I winded up leaving the visuals the way they are since everything works nevertheless.

The OS in both were the same. I winded up leaving things the way they were. After all, everything worked except for bigger visual icons. It was not the end of the world.

    Thanks for chiming in though.

    Hi drew,

It was all a matter of retrieve software that quit in one computer and get the same version into the Mac Pro again. I winded up contacting the software vendor where I got the software from and they kindly provided me with a link toward another version which installed flawlessly into the HDD where my original OS X was in the Mac Pro.

    All went back to normal.

Thanks for taking the time to chime in.
