Q: 2009 MacBook Pro keeps restarting after Yosemite update

i have a late 2009 MacBook Pro unibody. I was previously running Mavericks on it without a hitch. Tonight I decided to update to Yosemite thinking "what's the harm in this?" The download went fine and installed on the first try. I was happy to start using it but after 30 seconds, the computer restarted itself to a screen saying "your computer has restarted because of a problem" and goes to starting up again. Then after another 30 seconds after it started up completely, it goes ahead and restarts again. This has happened 5 times in a row so far. I have repaired the disk through the DU (which had nothing to be repaired) and I reset the system management controller. This is very very annoying. Any advice?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    Alternatively, see:

Reinstall OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Choose the version you have installed now:

OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X

OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X

OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X

OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet

if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Okay so as I previously stated, I already went through the repair disk process in the DU. I just went to reinstall Yosemite and now I get an error saying that it couldn't be completed. I restarted it to make sure and I got the same error, so now I'm deeper in the hole. Someone please help

Your description indicates that the MBP had a kernel panic.  Use these directions to log and post it:
