Q: No iCloud icon in my iPhoto system preferences, can't upload photo library

Hello,

I'm using Mac Air with OSX 10.8.5. None of my iPhoto library photos are uploading to iCloud. When I go to iPhoto-Preferences there is no iCloud tab, just General, Appearance, Sharing, Photo Stream, Accounts and Advanced. Photo Stream is turned on. There's no iCloud icon in the sidebar either. Can anyone help? Thanks

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Which version of iPhoto do you have?

You need at least iPhoto 9.2.2 for My Photo Stream.

If you need to update to a newer version, try the updaters on the support downloads page:  Apple - Support - Downloads

This Help Page says, that Shared Photo Streams  require iPhoto 9.5,

    see:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202786

To use iCloud Photo Sharing, you need an iCloud account (Apple ID), compatible devices, and up-to-date software:

    • iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iOS 7 or later
    • Mac using OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later and either iPhoto 9.5 or Aperture 3.5
    • Apple TV with Apple TV software 6.0 or later
    • PC using Windows 7 or later and iCloud for Windows (or iCloud Control Panel 3.1 or later)

If you enabled the Public Website option when you set up your shared album, your friends and family can view your photos and videos from any current web browser using a link that you provide.

Learn how to set up iCloud on all your devices.

I think, it was already possible with iPhoto 9.4.5, but you cannot update this version from the Support Page, and it is gone from the AppStore.

Which version of iPhoto '11?  You need at least iPhoto 9.5.

It's version 9.4.2 but there are no software updates showing in the App Store and when I specifically search the store for iphoto updates it says there are none available... iPhoto also does not appear in my purchases list in the App Store and I am not able to hide or unhide purchases. When I go to view my account, it just has my account ID summary and a manage account tab that just gives me the option to add a nickname.

Apple stopped selling iPhoto, and you cannot update iPhoto from the App Store. Only updating by reinstalling is possible.

But reinstall iPhoto from the AppStore requires that iPhoto is showing among your Purchase History.

So you will need the help of the App Store Support to be able to update to an iCloud compatible version. I am not sure, if the Appstore Support will help, if your iPhoto version has not been bought from the App Store or came preinstalled with Lion.

The other option to get iCloud access would be to upgrade to Yosemite and migrate your iPhoto Libraries to the new Photos.app.

    You're welcome.

I'd repair the iPhoto library before upgrading, because iPhoto will no longer work on Yosemite and you cannot repair any longer after the system upgrade. You may want to keep a bootable clone of your current system or at least a full Time Machine backup, so you can revert to your current system if need bee.

I posted a few hints for the migration from iPhoto to Photos here:   Notes on Migrating an iPhoto Library from iPhoto to Photos for Mac

    Good Luck!
