How do I copy photos to an external hard drive?

I've just started using 'Photo' on my new Mac and I've managed to get a load of photos into it - but firstly I can't locate them? And secondly I want to copy them to a hard drive for back up but can't work out how? So these are my questions -

1) where are all my photos stored and why can't I see them

2) how do I copy them to an external hard drive

(PS. I'm on Yosemite, and I'm NOT using icloud)

Thanks

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Photos stores the photo inside a database, the PhotosLibrary. By default the iPhotos Library is in your Pictures folder. The icon will look like a rainbow coloured flower.

User uploaded file

The Library is a closed package, you should not access the pictures inside directly using the Finder. Use Photos to access your photos.

To backup the photos on an external drive drag the complete Photos library to the drive. The external drive should be formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled).

depends on what you want to accomplish

To put pictures on an external drive select them in Photos and export (file menu ==> export) to the external drive

TO backup the Photos library be sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the photos library to the external drive (although for a backup is it better to run backup software like TimeMachine)

To run Photos off of an external drive be sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the photos library to the external drive and hold down the option key while launching Photos - select the new location and make sure the EHD is always available when Photos is launched and verify that tour backup software is backing up your EHD

FOr something else you need to describe what you what to do

but only 1,500 ish show in the iphoto library? Do I need to import all the photos into iphoto?

When you migrate to Photos only the photos in the iPhoto library will migrate - with this new info and introducing both iPhoto and Photos to the question you desired are even less clear than they were

What are you using iPhoto for? And what are you using Photos for? Note that changes made in one are not applied to the other - there is no connection between them

Please describe exactly what you have and what you want to accomplish

Sorry Larry, I realise I'm not being clear.

I have many photos in many places (hard drive, mac and google drive) - what I want to do is have them all in one place so that I can sort them out - then I want to be able to email some to friends, edit others and make a back up of the whole organised lot.

There are so many that my plan was to put them all on the external hard drive (as it's larger than my Air hard drive) and use that to sort them before backing up.

Does that make sense?

And how are the photos organised in these places?

If you have photos in iPhoto Libraries you can merge the iphoto Libraries with iPhoto Library Manager - with the full, paid version.
