I double tap the home key to bring up the apps running in the background and then press and hold an app but nothing happens.... The phone is new and I updated to ios8.4 yesterday. If anyone has had this issue and has a solution or simply knows a fix it would be much appreciated. Thks
After you double tap the home button, swipe up on the app image to close it. Tap the home button again when done. You tap and hold apps from the home screen to get the "x" to delete the app.

Slide the app up the screen, not hold down it.
FYI, when you double-click on the Home button, the list you see are Recently used apps, not "running" apps. iOS takes good care of its resource and memory management all by itself. You do not need to manually "quit" anything. It's a waste of your time.
