Very slow, pinwheeling MacBook Pro and seemingly no fix?

Hi all,

just fyi - i'm posting from my phone because my macbook is apparently no longer functional.

I'm running Yosemite now on a 2010 13" Macbook Pro. I've had this computer for coming up on 5 years and it has been ol' reliable until, strangely, just a couple weeks ago, things started slowing down. The beach ball kept coming up whenever I changed apps or even clicked anything, really - way too often. I tried closing unnecessary applications etc, but no dice, and according to Activity Monitor my memory is sufficient anyway. Checked storage too - only halfway full, still have a good 100 GB left. Tried upgrading to Yosemite (I was running Mountain Lion before) - No dice. Tried repairing disk permissions which seemed to help a little, I guess, but only slightly, not enough. THEN, for the real kicker, I tried booting it in safe mode and repairing disk permissions again (this time in safe mode, as recommended by a youtube video) - and that seemed to make everything horribly worse. I can hardly start it up and get it to the desktop now, as it is pinwheeling like no tomorrow, and frankly just not loading. I'm really not sure what to do from here.

If anyone can help me fix this problem and return my computer to normal running, I will be eternally grateful. I have only a limited amount of computer knowledge, so please bear with me.

Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18761

Reset SMC. Choose the method for “On Mac notebooks with non-removable battery”.

If this doesn’t help, can you run EtreCheck and post the report here please?

If this started happening without your having made any changes and without a warning of low disk space, then it's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

I've tried to verify/repair the disk in disk utility multiple times - each time it would say it appears to be okay, which is curious. As for the hardware test, I tried running it the other night and it froze on me a few minutes in - by froze I mean I fell sleep after a couple hours of it whirring its fans, got a good 8 more hours of rest, and woke up to find it was still on the same screen, fans whirring and all. I had to hard reset it to end the test, as attempting to end it properly (end test button, or command + . ) failed. I think my best bet at this point is to just go ahead and replace the hard drive and see if that fixes it. I'll update here once that happens - thanks again for the help, to you and to everybody.
