Using a T.V as a monitor with a 2010 Mac Pro Tower

Is it possible to use a T.V (with HDMI inputs only) as the secondary monitor for a 2010 Mac Pro Tower? I purchased the mini display jack/HDMI connector, but the computer and/or T.V is not recognizing it at all. Some have said there is a way to make it work.....and others have said - no-way.
