I delete a clip from the project timeline (using either the delete key or the menu pick) and end up with a gap. Is there a setting that locks the timeline so when a clip is deleted the ones after it don't shift and close the gap? Right now I have to manually move the clips t close the gap.
On a side note is there a "close gap" command like there was in FCP 7?

I'm guessing this is a group of connected clips – that is, clips connected to the primary storyline, If so, select them and click on New Storyline. That will create a secondary storyline, which will behave like a primary storyline.

It sounds like you're deleting a clip in the primary storyline. If you're not, ignore this. If you are deleting a clip and you don't want the magnetic timeline to close the gap, you have to use the replace with gap function, which is Shift-delete, or the forward delete key on an extended keyboard. To remove a gap on the primary storyline you select it and delete it. If you're talking about connected clips, they behave differently. Connected clips don't move if you delete one.
Thanks to both Russ and Tom! Creating a storyline was all that was needed. I guess I need to keep studying! I am so used to FCP 7 doing the switch to 10 has been challenging. Anyway that solved it thanks!
