Cannot open older Word docs in new Pages

Cannot open older Word docs in new Pages

Any advice here? I upgraded to Yosemite earlier this year and ever since cannot open or convert older Word docs to Pages for revision or viewing.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

The current version of Pages (according to Pages: Supported file formats - Apple Support ) supports importing the following:

Pages for Mac and Pages for iOS support importing:

Pages ’09 (4.0 or later)

Microsoft Word - Office Open XML (.docx) and Office 97 or later (.doc)

Plain Text files (.txt)

I heartily endorse the LibreOffice suggestion in that discussion.

I have two Word 1997 - 2004 documents, both .doc format. One created in January 1997, and the other in January 1998. Office 97 was released in Nov 1996. The .docx format was released in Dec 2006, just in time to be the default file format for Office 2007 in Jan 2007.

The yellow highlight is that both documents were opened with moderate formatting errors. The green highlight is that both documents were opened with accurate formatting as though they had originally been created by the application.

Pages '09 v4.3 - Document too old, could not open either.
Pages v5.5.3 - Could not open either.
Microsoft Word 15.11.2 in Office 2016 for Mac Preview - Could not open either.
Bean 3.2.5 (discontinued) - opened both with formatting issues.
Mellel 3.4.0 (new) - opened both documents with formatting issues.
LibreOffice v4.4.4.3 - opened both documents as though it originally created them.
