BTW, the Mac Pro is mid 2010, the MBP is early 2013 Retina. I read and followed the instructions for "older & newer Macs", but still no go.

Are you certain you followed the current instructions listed in "Sending files to and from an older Mac" here?

Mac Basics: AirDrop lets you send files from your Mac to nearby Macs and iOS devices - Apple Support

OS X Yosemite has significantly changed the way AirDrop works.

Pretty sure. I opend air drop on the 2013 MBP, then on the 2010 Mac Pro. When nothing came up, I searched for older device (on the MBP) ... still searching. They're sitting right next to each other. Tried dragging files to either air drop box, but it won't let me.

Just to double check ... you do have WiFi and Bluetooth turned "On" on both devices, right?

Yes, but I walked away from it for a few hours and when I got home it worked.I don't know exactly how long they took to recognize each other, but it was a good long time before I left. Seems to defeat the purpose... Any way, maybe now they'll connect faster. Thanks.

    Hi Jed,

After installing Yosemite on your system, you have to setup Airdrop between Yosemite and iOS. After that, you can easily send and receive files between two different devices.

But, in order to take full advantages of Airdrop, there are some software and hardware requirements which you needs:-

    1. Use the Airdrop in-between iOS device and Mac: The Mac needs to be running OS X Yosemite and it needs to be 2012 or later iMac,

    2. Use Airdrop between Mac and Mac: It needs to be early 2009 iMac or newer, late 2008 or newer MacBook, late 2010 or newer MacBook Air.

You should check the above mentioned requirement ad setup the Airdrop. After that, you can be able to use Airdrop on your system.
