iPhone 4S / IOS 8.4 with greyed out wifi button

I have an iPhone 4S bought in November 2015. I recently upgraded to IOS 8.4 and it seemed to be working fine.

When I woke up on Sunday 12 July 2015, I discovered that the wifi button, in settings, was greyed out and so I cannot connect to any wifi networks.

I have tried resetting the phone and restoring the phone to factory settings - neither of which worked

I plan to visit my local Apple Store in the next couple of days to seek advice. My phone is out of warranty.

All I can find online are suggestions to heat up the device and/or put it in the freezer - neither of which sound very sensible to me.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Any other thoughts or comments?

One poster on another related thread suggests...

"This is a known issue affecting a very, very small percentage of iPhone 4S units that get a greyed out wi-fi at some point, usually afterany iOS update done over wi-fi. The most common cause is that the wi-fi chip gets too hot during the update process, and either temporarily disables or burns out permanently. This also has happened when someone updates/downloads a lot of apps at one time over wi-fi. Basically, the wi-fi chip runs too hard and too fast for too long, and fails. It is a hardware issue, not an iOS issue."

To what extent is that correct?

Thanks in anticipation.

Did you get a resolution to this? I've got an iPad 2 WiFi here with the very same issue, WiFi was functional prior to updating to iOS 8.4. The option within Settings to toggle WiFi ON/OFF is now grayed out (unable to toggle WiFi ON or OFF).

Really not impressed with the way Apple have dealt with the release of this update, we aren't the only people who appear to have this issue or similar issues. The fact that Apple have unsigned iOS 8.3 (obviously due to Apple wanting its customers to use Apple Music, and not wanting its customers reverting back to 8.3), leaving users with unusable devices where rollback is not possible.

I really shouldn't need to take this device to an Apple store, this issue simply shouldn't have happened.

And that's exactly what they want you to do - buy, buy, buy! The recent software releases have been very poor and no-one knows the solution to the problem; also finding it suspicious that it is affecting mainly the older units...mmmm.

My wife's 4s is the same and very very occasionally it will pick up a wifi signal but it can drop it (and others) for up to 48hrs. Tried everything including iTunes full restore and freezer.

They need to get a grip big-time before damaging their reputation.

My solution was to buy an LG G3 from Argos for £280 (reduced to nearly half price). After 5 years of buying Apple products I have come the conclusion they have lost the plot. Now I have a removable battery, expandable memory (SD), better quality OS, reliable hardware, half the cost, and best of all, I'm no longer locked into Apple's empire.

Apple should be thanking those giving negative feedback and acting quickly to regain customers confidence. Are they?

By the way, the freezer trick only worked a few times for me. Now I have a useless iPhone 4S.

Hi. WiFi on my iPhone 4s also got greyed out after updating to iOS 8.4. (I updated it yesterday to iOS 8.4.1 but nothing changed). The thing is, I went to certificated Apple service and they've replaced WiFI chip. Everything was working fine for about a week or so and then WiFi got dimmed again. So I send it back and they've replaced it again, since I got service warranty, but the problem came back. I know there is a big chance that motherboard is faulty but the thing is everything works fine except WiFi. Off course battery is draining fast after the update but phone is working fine. BEfore update battery could last 2 days, now 8 hours barely.

So my question is, did someone on this forum tried to replace battery and this way fixed broken WIFI. I read somewhere on some blog bellow at comments, way back when iOS 8 was released, that this actually worked and by replacing the old with new battery WiFi was alive again. Please share some info regarding the battery.

First of all incase of this situation, most of the time it is a software problem rather than a hardware problem. I think it occurs as some of the versions of iOS(be it new or old) softwares are unable to keep all the necessary hardwares intact and working smooth. Some of the hardware parts may not work due to insufficient amount of heat inside the device which make them working. The process which I'm about to state below should work for both new and old iOS.

I have myself lost my Wi-Fi on iPhone 4s after the iOS 9 update and it was literally for above a month or so. I almost gave up hopes after trying different methods(Putting the iPhone in Freezer a couple of times to Using a Hair Dryer to heat it up) to bring the Wi-Fi back to life.. The Wi-Fi came back after those crazy experiments but only for some 10-15 mins.

So by not wasting anymore time lets go straight into the business:

1.If ur Wi-Fi got greyed-out after a particular update then wait for the new update just after that (in my case it got out on iOS 9.1 so I waited for iOS 9.2) and as soon the update arrives install the update using your Mac/PC

2.Before installing the update, get Backup of all your Files,Photos,Videos,Music,Games, etc.

3.After installing the update just to make sure no files of the older iOS persists in the device Erase your iPhone (Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Contents And Settings)

4.After doing that, plug you iPhone to the charging port make sure it charges you iPhone.

5.Increase your Brightness to Full, Screen Auto-Lock time to Never, Turn on 3G and Mobile Data, Open Some Games in the Background, Finally open the Camera App, and leave your iPhone in this set up for 2 hours.

6.Before doing this make sure your battery is at or above 50%.

7.The main reason to do this is to provide internal heat to the device so that it can reset all its hardware components.

8.After 2 hours or above the iPhone should turn hot and you should notice ⚠ (Exclamation Triangle Warning Sign) at the place of the flash on the Camera App.

9.For reassurance you can also try to light up the Torch from the down menu, it should also have been disabled by then.

10.Now leave all the setup as it is just go to the Settings>General>Reset and Rest Network Settings.

11.As the iPhone resets turn on your Wi-Fi router and get back to your iPhone.

12.Toggle up the down menu and you should get back your Wi-Fi.

13.Now after this for 2-3 days while turning on the Wi-Fi on your iPhone just turn on the brightness a bit towards the max(to maintain the proper working of the Wi-Fi chip) so as the Wi-Fi gets stabilised.

If the above mentioned process didn't solve your problem, then I'm sorry to say but I think you are facing a hardware problem as for so you have to visit an Apple Centre to get things fixed.
