iOS 8.4 and GM Color Touch Radio

I have a 2012 GMC Terrain automobile with the Color Touch Infotainment system (not Intellilink). Up to iOS 8.3 on my iPhone 6 would connect via USB and function normally as an iPod with the system. With iOS 8.4 however the car gets stuck on “Reading USB” and will not finish the connection. No playback, no music. I’m wondering if anyone else is seeing this behavior on this vintage of GM car radios? I plan on calling GM to see if there’s a radio firmware update available the dealer can apply. The Intellilink system (which I do not have) has the ability to be updated by the user with a USB stick.

While I suspect a glitch in iOS 8.4 it’s also entirely possible the 2012 radios don’t fully support iOS 8.

So if you are seeing something like this on your GM car I would like to hear from you.

Hello ikrupp,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I see you are having difficulties in completing the pairing process between your iPhone and your GMC Terrain. I would recommend taking a look at this article for troubleshooting steps. Contacting GM about a firmware update is a good idea and one of the suggestions in the article.

Jeff, he is in NO WAY referring to pairing with Bluetooth. He is referring to USB to Lightning connection which has worked up until 8.4 was released. I am a car audio specialist, and I also do expeditor work for car dealerships, and I too can confirm this is a problem with 8.4

I just went next door to my brother-in-laws 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 with Intellilink, and his iPhone 5s, my sister's iPhone 6, and my iPhone 6 Plus will not work at all via USB anymore, whereas all 3 were working a month ago on 8.3, both for iPod music, AND Pandora playback via Apple USB. These radios are built for USB to iPod/iPhone connections, and GM has been in this camp for over 6 years with all Apple devices working with any USB radio.

Bluetooth streaming is primarily a universal fallback for Android devices to use.

So no, your suggestion for him to pair via Bluetooth does not address the issue that APPLE broke the coding for it to work with 8.4, and furthermore, it should not be GM's problem to make a firmware update for their radios that were specced and working with Apple parameters that were given to them in the engineering process over 5 years ago.

Don't offer help if you don't understand the question please, it just leads to more bad information and wasted space on internet forums.
