How can I find out who my Mac is registered to

I have a new MacBook Pro and went to register it at supportprofile.apple.com, but apparently the serial number is already associated with another Apple ID. Is there a way I can find out to whom it has been registered?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Thanks. It was a new Mac, closed box etc, purchased in Dubai but not from one of the official authorised resellers, but another major electronics store (ie it wasn't purchased from anywhere dodgy).

Is there a system where I can look up the serial number and see who it is registered to? How can I ask Apple that myself?

If you bought this computer from a store and it was sold as a new computer I’d return it for a refund. It isn’t new, it is an open box or refurb. If you typed the serial number in correctly and it is already registered, someone used it before you did. If you knew the computer was an open box, return, or refurb, then call AppleCare to get it registered in your name.
