Internal speakers not working after OS X 10.10.4 update
After doing an automatic update to OS X 10.10.4, my internal speakers are no longer available as an output option in System Preferences (ironic, as this is the very same update that installed Apple Music). I called Apple Support and they told me to try the following, which I did, but to no avail:
We will be resetting the low-level power distribution for the computer via the SMC (system management controller). This will not effect files on the computer.
To reset the SMC:
1. Shut down the computer (if it isn’t already).
2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option (Alt) keys and the power button at the same time.
4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
5. Perform the NVRAM reset.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
To reset the NVRAM/PRAM:
1. Shut down your Mac (if not already).
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option (Alt), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option (Alt)-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information.
