No. They don't do that.
You can reset your Mac to factory settings if it's running either v10.7 Lion, v10.8 Mountain Lion, v10.9 Mavericks, or v10.10 Yosemite using OS X Recovery
It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know know more information about your computer; size, exact year built, RAM installed and OS you're running. Any history prior to your incident would also be helpful.
When you say "refurbish" is there a problem? There was a recall on this model but it has unfortunately ended.
If it's running OK then a SSD and at least 4-8 GB RAM will make it run faster.

Apple will repair your MBP for a fee. I am not certain what your definition of 'refurbish' may be.
