Q: Not finding boot usb 2.0 stick on late 2014 iMAC with Fusion Drive

I get an error after running boot camp on black screen "NO BOOTABLE DEVICE - INSERT BOOT DISC AND PRESS ANY KEY"

My drives look like this:

The thing is that I've been able to once boot to my USB stick... and when I did it was only by using rEFind... and I didn't have keyboard drivers.  This has not been replicatable.  When I boot with the mac bootloader, it doesn't see the USB stick.  reFInd sees it... and then I get the error message above.  What next?

I know my ISO is good because I have windows 7 running in a VM.

When installing Windows, please remove all external storage. You should have KVM and the USB2 with the BCA-created installer.

Keyboard/trackpad inoperative, black screen, or alert messages when installing Windows 7 - Apple Support.

I followed your advice.  I also cut out my usb hub just to be extra safe.  This has resulted in a message I haven't seen before on this machine:

    "non-system disk

    press any key to reboot"

Can you verify that your USB is a USB2 flash drive?

It says 480 Mb/sec, which should be USB2 if I was reading wikipedia page correctly.

    Interesting.

I followed the advice on creating a bootable USB stick from windows here:

Bootcamp issue: "Non-system disk, press any key to reboot"

Now I have bootable USB stick!  Yay!  I see the windows installer start up!  Yay!

And... I still have no keyboard or mouse control.  Sad.

Off to do some more research... at least we're to the next level.

Are you using a wired Keyboard/Mouse? If the USB does not have BC drivers ($WinPEDriver$ folder), you will not be able to use BT or wired KM.

My keyboard and mouse are wired.  I've seen the $WinPEDriver$ folder on the drive, but I didn't look this particular time.  I'm redoing the "download windows support software" option from bootcamp right now because it was suggested in another post.  We'll see how it goes.

No luck so far.  Keyboard and mouse not working wired or BT.  I'm still looking for a mac side solution for getting those drivers working at install time.

Can you try each USB port in the back and run the two steps to reset SMC and NVRAM after each port has been used?

Do you have another USB2 flash disk to test with?

Is there any external storage or peripherals connected to the iMac?

Moving in a different direction... I manually updated the boot.wim file as described here:

    http://codeabitwiser.com/2014/03/how-to-install-windows-7-with-only-usb-3-0-port s/

This allowed me to get the install process going.  When the boot camp process initiated post install however, it hung on a corrupt ATI driver.  I'm about to reboot and try aborting the post install bootcamp install and see if I can get to the desktop.

Upon reboot back to Win7, I got to the desktop, and was able to launch the bootcamp driver install.  This time, I got a different corruption error, and it told me that my USB stick might be corrupt.  This seems unlikely, given that I seem to have a functional win7 OS installed now.  Anyone else out there experienced anything like this?

This implies that your USB is a USB3 device, not a USB2 device.
