My mail wont open or close

I use Yosemote, and I´m trying to get my mail to open up. It is "on", but I can´t open it, nor can I close it. And I can´t uninstall it, since it´s open. So consequntely, I can´t download certain upgrades. This really bugs me, to say the least. Can anyone help out?
