Q: Restore Files/Pics from old Hard Drive to new OS X?

Greeting fellow MAC users! I need some help with a perplexing issue I'm having with one of my customers; His MacBook6,1 woud not start up and had Kernel Panic startup errors and NOTHING I did helped. So I installed a new HD and reloaded Snow Leopard. I am now connecting the OLD DRIVE via a USB SATA dock and I am trying to get his docs, pics, files, apps etc transferred to the new OS. Is there some sort of time machine utility or copy utility that I can use for that? I guess I need to know: WHAT is the best way to go about doing this?

Thanks in advance!

Glen

    Hello comstox,

I understand that you have installed a new hard drive and want to move the contents of the previous hard drive to the new one. You can accomplish this two ways, one that is automated and the other is going to be a manual transfer.

The first automated way of moving the data over is using Migration Assistant. You will want to choose the option "From a Time Machine backup or other disk". It will notice that the hard drive is plugged in and will notice that it had OS X installed and can migrate the information over. Make sure that you do all the updates for the MacBook after the migration completes. Take a look at the article below for a more detailed steps to migrate the data over.

The second option would be simply dragging and dropping the contents to the appropriate folder.

Hope that you get things moved over with ease and take care.
