OS X Server and Time Machine Backups
I read that restoring from network backup is not a good idea, why? What files are not recovered when restoring over a network?
Restoring OS X Server from a Time Machine backup - Apple Support
My setup consists of a Mac Mini (Server) and Synology RS815+. The Mac connects using iSCSI to my Synology over the network to provide "local" storage. However, if I had to restore the Mac Mini (Server), I would not have local access to the disk, nor would I be able to recover without first re-installing a vanilla OS X install with the third party tool to re-connect. I don't believe time machine would restore properly at this point, correct? If so, I may look into buying a USB/TB external drive to backup the Time Machine server while the clients backup to the Synology array.
