Q: Why Freeze at Start-up?

My iMac is ill. By default (when I do nothing special), it freezes at start-up. :-(

To make my iMac Boot _&_ Work properly, I must depress [Option] at start-up. Then I choose OS X 10.10 & away I go, happily, like now. :-)

Do you have an idea of what I can do? Thank you.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), 4 GB of RAM

A:

It may have "forgotten" where the startup volume is. Open System Preferences - Startup - make sure the startup disk is highlighted and then restart to test. Please post back with the results.

Hello rkaufmann87,

YES: what you suggested worked. (In System Preferences, I re-freshed my _one_ Startup Disk, as Macintosh HD / OS X 10.10.4.) My iMac works now, so I feel happily Relieved. :-)

I am glad that I knew about depressing the [Option] key at start-up. Please teach me: "Does depressing the [Option] key at start-up do more than let me select a Startup Disk? (I feel curious, OK?)

Hello, rkaufmann87. Thanks to you, I printed the information in Startup key combinations for Mac - Apple Support, slickly double-sided.

Happy I feel that I can _still_ learn about my [now] iMac after _31_ - years. (At the age of 21, I set-off on my Macintosh career in 1984, with a Mac Plus. I turn 52 day-after tomorrow.)
