Q: how do I setup my child's apple id on IOS 5.1.1

My daughter has been given an iPad1 which has IOS 5.1.1 but the instructions for setting up an Apple ID for her only apply to IOS 8 so how do I go about creating an account for her?

You can't. Family Sharing only works with iOS 8. If your child is 13 or older, you can set up an Apple ID for her. If you want to set up an ID for her without using a credit card, which I would imagine you would want to do, look at this.
