Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel on start up

My Imac 3.4 Ghz intel i7 running 10.9.5 recently has started taking minutes to boot when it used to take only seconds. Runs fine after though. is this normal? I've unplugged all external disks, makes no difference plus I have at least 60% free disk space. Its a ssd and the computer is only a couple of years old. Is there a simple reason for this or is the hard drive about to die?
