Iphone won't stay connected to macbook air

Every time I try to plug my iPhone 4s into my macbook air, the iPhone will either not connect at all, or it will connect and disconnect over and over. How do I make it connect and stay connected?

It has been doing this since I got my macbook last year.

I have tried nine different working cords, but it happens with all cords.
