iPhoto library too old

My old mbp late 2011 hdd died. I've tried to copy across onto new ssd drive my important documents and pictures. However drive is locked read only (tried almost everything in the support community i read). I've since used Data Rescue 3 to pull the documents and iPhoto/photos library off my old hdd. The problem I'm facing at the moment is when i try and open my old iPhoto library it says its too old. Downloaded and ran the iPhoto library updater which says library is up to date and i can open with photos. Yet it doesn't work just says library too old.

Cheers

What is the exact error message? Literally?

Is it a Photos library, an iPhoto Library, or do you have two libraries? Which version of iPhoto created the library?

If the drive us read-only, you cannot open the iPhoto library on the drive in iphoto, but you should be able to copy it to your internal drive or a different drive with drag-and-drop. Have you tried that? I am not sure, if Data rescue understands the format of an iPhoto library and will copy it correctly.

Please upgrade your library “iPhoto Library.photolibrary” using the free iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.

Assuming with a copy of iphoto i can open this?

As for my hdd it was my old internal Hdd from my macbook. It died so i tried recovering it and reinstalling new OS X but i didn't have enough space. I looked high and low for ways to delete some data off it i don't need but found no help.

It is worth a try.

Rename the copy to a different name, so you recognize it in the file chooser panel. iPhoto Library Upgrader will by default try to open the iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder or the last opened library. And that will naturally be already a correct version. You have to direct if Library Upgrader to the library you want to be updated by clicking the "Choose Library Button".
