me too just suddenly showed up and won't stop --making me nuts!!

Read similar problem from a few yrs ago but they suggested moving other wireless devices

away from computer --that they may be causing it but I don't have any other wireless devices

near this room except a printer which is shut off. It's 1:43 am and no one else is up--no other

computers or anything else on to be causing it.

After posting about this pop-up… I think it’s fixed.

I had posted to:

Apple Support Communities / Mac OS & System Software / Mac OS X Technologies

How do I get rid of: http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html?

before finding this one. In repsonse to my original post, someone responded Apple was aware of the problem

and working on it. But.... in the meantime...... in my non-tech savvy way... I fixed it.

I was very frustrated…..but I realized it appeared the first time after upgrading

some apps.

After some research, I decided I needed to make sure I hadn’t been infected with anything harmful.

I went to ClamXav and downloaded their virus/malware application on the 30 day Free Trial and scanned my

computer for any viruses or malware.

I also ran AdwareMedic - another free application an apple employee had recommended I try a few months ago when

my computer got hijacked with a program that was adware and trying to sell me some phony corrective/protective software.

Neither of these programs found anything wrong with my system - no known viruses, malware or adware.

That left me thinking about those two upgrades…..

I removed 2 applications I had downloaded upgrades for in response to pop-ups

I’d received last night telling me my software was out of date. If you did the same

for either of these two apps, this might clear the issue up for you too. I don’t know for certain

which one caused the problem but both are easy to uninstall and start over fresh.

I had upgraded:

Adobe Flash Player - I’d clicked on the link in pop-up to get the new version.

Microsoft’s Silverlight- I was using for watching streaming video on Amazon. This one

I had googled “Silverlight” and went to the website from the official website listed.

I don;t know which one caused the problem because Silverlight suddenly wanted to be upgraded

but was so slow downloading it, I went to Pogo to play a few games while waiting. I was immediately

confronted with the upgrade pop-up for Flash.

Since there was nothing else I could think of, I thought that possibly, one or the other

of these two upgrades was causing the problem.

Here’s a step-by-step of what I did in my attempt to correct:

1) Go into your LIBRARY to the INTERNET PLUG-INS folder.

2) Move to the TRASH the following plug-ins:

flash.xpt

flash plug-in

silverlight plug-in

3) While still in the Library folder, go to APPLICATION SUPPORT folder

4) Move to the TRASH the following folders:

Macromedia folders - I had two; one just said “Macromedia” and the other said

“Macromedia” with some numbers after it. If I remember correctly it was 3 something….

but the only Macromedia software I was aware of or thought was installed on my computer

was Flash…so I dumped both folders.

“Microsoft” folder - Note: The only Microsoft software I had installed was Silverlight

so I wasn’t risking messing up any other Microsoft applications by trashing the entire folder.

5) While still in the Library APPLICATION SUPPORT folder go into the “ADOBE” folder.

Within it you will probably see several other folders. I don’t know what they’re all for

but you should see a folder “FLASH PLAYER INSTALL MANAGER”. Move it to the trash too.

You are now done with the Library folder.

While still in your Macintosh HD

6) Go to your APPLICATIONS folder. Just to double check to make sure you don’t have an Adobe Flash,

or (Microsoft) Silverlight app. If you do, move it to the trash as well.

7) Clear the cache for your browser. Also, if using Safari, go into those preferences to double check

& remove any plug-ins shown under SECURITY -“Manage Website Plug-ins”

or the ADVANCED tabs for those same two application’s plug-ins.

You do this by highlighting the app on the left, this will show you if any websites are configured

to use that app. If there are any shown on the right side, highlight them and click on the minus sign.

Don’t worry about the effect on those websites, they’ll simply redo it the first time to go there again

and need to use that app.

8) Now quit Safari. Then reboot it.

I believe the problem with this pop-up window had something to do with one of those two

application upgrades. So once you’ve cleared everything out……. you can start over with fresh downloads.

At some point, I also cleared my download file before starting over fresh.

I think at this point I also restarted my computer to make sure everything was cleaned out.

9) Go to ADOBE.COM and download fresh Flash player and follow instructions to install it.

10) Go to MICROSOFT.COM/SILVERLIGHT and download the Silverlight plug-in again and follow instructions to install it.

11) EMPTY SECURELY your trash to get rid of permanently all the removed software.

I waited to permanently delete to double check folders and see what was and what wasn’t

installed with the new downloads. For instance, I now only have 1 Macromedia folder

in my Application Support folder.

Since completing all these steps, I have not had the pop-up reappear for over 2 hours.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

I just went into system > library > CoreServices and changed the name of Captive Network Assistant.app to xCaptive Network Assistant.app... was this a good idea ? But it sure stopped the pop up thing, which normally would show up on commercial cafe/resturant/airport wifi networks, when or if you try to connect to them. I was worried someone was trying to gain access to my Mac and do something , because it was around a time i was in issue with someone online, and did not realize it , that everyone was getting the same problem.
