MacBook insists power supply is connected

i just purchased a used MacBook ultimo 2008. The battery works fine, but it insists that the charger is connected no matter what.

The system report says the battery is in normal working condition. and it can see the charger and its serial no. The only thing that changes when i disconnect the charger is whether or not it charges the battery. And this takes an enormous amount of time - it took half an hour to charge 2%.

I have tried the following:

Reset the SMC

Reset the NVRAM

Tried a different Apple Magsafe charger

Tried a different battery

cleaned the Magsafe adapter on both the macbook and the charger

Please help! 😟

Test the charger on another Mac.

Run an Apple hardware test:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

Open System Information>Power and post the folowing from your Mac:

(make certain that the charger is connected:

I cant get the AHT to work. It stalls for a minute or so and then it loads OSX.

Are you using the original installation disk, that came with your Mac, that has the AHT instructions written on it?

That is unfortunate that you did not get the original disks. You can order duplicates from Apple Customer Service.

Download the appropriate AHT from this web site:

Your problem may be your battery. I note that is has 692 cycles where the expected service life span is only up to 300 cycles:

Run an Apple hardware test and see if that picks up any clues:
