Q: Can I 1) find the serial number of a stolen ipod and 2) use an old iphone as a ipod?

My 5th generation ipod with video was recently stolen from my car.  So, I have two questions:

1) it is possible to extract the serial number some how from itunes?  I looked in the backups & it's not there.  I've also logged on to support and it isn't there either.  I found a thread about itunes 10 where you hovered over a bar, but I can't get that to work.  I tried to use the chat feature but to use that you...  A serial number.

2) after I got over the 'well that *****' phase, I calmed down and thought, 'oh well, no biggie- I have two iphone 4s' and a 5.  So I'll just use them as a no service iPod.  Tried to sync my music and I got the 'you can download your music' message.  Well, I have close to 6,000 songs.  I can't even use it on shuffle, as it tries to download music & it has no connection.  Is there a way I can simply sync the music I own?  I fiddle with it a bit and eventually it tried to sync 18 of my songs.  Out of 6,000.  Thoughts on what to do?

Thanks!

Depending, since I can only talk about iTunes in Windows. You can certainly find your serial number if you have backed the device up via iTunes. Go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and then hover the mouse pointer over a backup of the iPod and the serial number will display.

I'm not sure what your issue might be with the iPhones and syncing, since you don't provide much information except it won't work. But as long as the devices are active, even without a SIM you can sync via iTunes by connecting the devices to the computer.

O.K., I was able to get the serial number- I held crtl down and clicked on the about itunes and it popped up.  I was able to get that to the police.  Yes!

ChrisJ4203, sorry I wasn't as helpful in explaining my issues.  Let me try it again.

    I am using a iPhone 4 with 7.0.4.  I haven't updated it yet.  I am using itunes version 12.2.0.145.

I had hoped that I couldn't simply hook up my 4, transfer all of the music over and use it in my car as an ipod.  When I hooked it up, I got the message that itunes match was on.  It says 'eeek5127's iphone can access your icloud music library.  Songs can be downloaded and played via wi-fi or a cellular network.'  I went to the phone itself and turned up music match.  When I hooked it up, only 18 of my songs could be transferred.  I turned music match back on and started downloading, but that's a lot of work.  Is their an easier way where it can be hooked up, have music synced and me go on my merry way?  Thanks!

Your issue is the fact that you seem to be wanting to use iTunes Match or Apple Music, which cannot be done without an active internet connection when using the device. You need to turn off what you are not going to use and then sync your local library to the iPhone. It would be the same as what you did before. Just make sure that iCloud Music Library, Apple Music are turned off. If you had an iTunes Match subscription, you can use it to download your music as well.
