Q: New developer needs guidance

I am new to development. I have Visual studio 10 on a Toshiba C655(4 GB ram ,intel core i3, 2,4GHZ) "OS Windows 7 Home" . what do i need to purchase ( minimally) in order to begin programming for the "oldest" iPad or the newest? I have a specific product in mind, and it uses the old iPad as a solution. I have heard X5 is the developers language, but it doesn't run on every Mac, or mac mini. Which model do I need to purchase to begin learning . Thank you for your support.

Don't even think about investing time or money in your idea have done a proper business plan and someone with real business experience, and who isn't a friend or relative, has reviewed it and is begging you to invest. Do not give up your day job. Do not use your savings and NEVER take out personal loans to finance developing your idea.

People who aren't developers are often shocked at the level of skill needed and the hours of work that has to be invested in relatively even the simplest applications to make them saleable.

There are two ways to make money from software: mass-market and niche. To make a (first world) living in the mass market you need to sell roughly 100,000 $1 licences a year and do so every year until you retire. This is difficult because the (third world) copycats will see your success and churn out cheap knock-offs and eat your lunch. As an individual you won't have the resources to protect your IP, even if your idea is protectable, which they often aren't.

Life as a niche developer, where you have expertise in a particular industry and a lot of contacts who are willing to pay for your expertise + software as a package is a better bet. BUT you need to have clients willing to pay in the region $1K - $10K per year for your services and people who are paying that will expect your attention so you won't be able to service more than about twenty of them. Also, you need to be a pretty skilled and fast developer to serve this market, which you evidently are not - at least not yet!

The problem with your 'idea' is that it is niche, but your market is people, you say, who can't afford new iPad. If that's the case you won't even be able to cover your costs.

    C.

    Way too old.

You're not going to be able to develop for iOS or OS X without a much newer Mac.

That appears to be a late 2007 MacBook Pro. It can run Yosemite and ElCapatin.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro

Thus, it can run the latest Xcode.

Max memory is limited to 6 GB though

Thank you Hypernova! Ill keep looking. It appears im actually going to have to spend that 650$ budget or better..! Perhaps I am asking the wrong question.

Which model...Which is the least expensive model that can run Xcode 7? thank you again.

Refurbished Macs are as good as new but cheaper:

Any of these should be sufficient.
