Q: AppleTV slow throughput - have tried everything
I am an network engineer with over 25 years experience. I also manage the Internet access for our customers.
We have a client that has AppleTV, it streams at an incredibly slow speed from ITUNES. It will frequently fail to start playing high def content like Showtime and say it will take 6 hours or more.
The customer has a 15Mbps connection that delivers. I have a router and can monitor all the traffic flows.
AppleTV has been updated, restored and even a second ATV was tested. We bypassed the wifi and cabled directly to the Internet bypassing the router also. I also made sure it's using a local DNS to avoid GEO DNS issues.
The think still runs like a snail. When trying to download HIGH-DEF content it will vary between 1600Kbps-3200Kbps throughput. At the time it's choking and failing I can easily run a speedtest, download high-def netflix, or even just download a file at many Mbps/sec while ATV is running at a crawl.
They have spent a lot of money trying to get this working and it's a dud so far.
I talked to the Genius bar but they know less about it than I do. Does anyone have anything else to suggest to get this thing working? Is there a way to troubleshoot the issue?
Does anyone have a real solid answer? They are ready to trash it but they are upset as they already made a number of purchases on ITUNES as well.
Thanks,
- Dan
