USB Hard drive won't mount

I have a problem with a hard drive connected in an external USB enclosure to a Mac Mini Core Duo, that occasionally fails to mount automatically when powered up. Apple's System Profiler "sees" the drives (and both formatted partitions on it), but I cannot access the files. Is there any type of utility that will allow me to mount the drive manually?
