It sounds like you are sometimes unable to share a text file using the AirDrop feature of your iOS device. The following Knowledge Base articles offer some great recommendations and steps for troubleshooting your issue:

Make sure to review these settings are correct for both sender and receiver:
What you need
To share content with AirDrop, both people need one of these devices using iOS 7 or later, or a Mac with OS X Yosemite:
- iPhone 5 or later
- iPad (4th generation or later)
- iPad mini
- iPod touch (5th generation)
You also need to turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If you want to share with your contacts, sign in to your iCloud account.

If you are still having trouble using AirDrop from a particular app, you may want to close the app(s) by using the information in this article:
