Can someone gift an paid iBook in India where only free iBooks are available?

I am from India. Over here only limited free books are available in iBooks so I can't purchase and download freely. I don't know when apple is going to launch an official iBooks store. I have a friend who can purchase and gift me books from USA. I would like to know if he gifts me few books which are not available in India will I still be able to download them or not?

No, you cannot. In order for the recipient to be able to redeem the gift:

The item would need to be available in their iBooks/App/iTunes store
The purchaser and the recipient must have accounts using the same currency and in the same country.
