6TB drives won't mount after restart in Mac Pro 2012

The problem manifests itself when a 6TB HGST drive does NOT mount on the desktop nor appears in the Disk Utility after a reboot. The ONLY way I have figured out how to work around this problem is to shut down the computer and the open the case and slightly pull out one 6TB hard drive (i.e. enough to release it from the SATA connector on the logic board) and then push it back in. At that point, if I boot the computer any and all 6TB HGST drives installed in the computer will appear on the desktop until I restart the next time. I don't have to remove each and every drive to make them all appear, just one.

When I first experienced this issue, I assumed it was a hardware problem with that one computer, but I have now experienced it again with a different computer at the different company and with a 6TB HGST drive from a different production batch. Now that I have two data points, I want to test this configuration on other computers to see if I can figure out if it is more widespread than the existing two machines.

The similarities between the two machines are more than the differences. They are both Mac Pro 2010 5,1 models at their core, but they are also both the 2012 variant that was a slight upgrade from the 2010 model. They both have the shipping EFI firmware (which is the latest for that model). They both have 20GB of RAM and they both run Mac OS X 10.8.5. One machine is used for graphic design and the other is a server. They also both have more than one drive slot being used. The one machine that is the server have four drives. Two are 2GB drives used as the boot partitions. The last two are 6TB data drives. The other machine that is used for design has two 2TB drives for booting and backup and one 6TB drive for Time Machine (the fourth slot is empty). In both cases the 2TB drives are Toshiba drives (using the HGST derived manufacture process). Also in both cases the two 2TB drives are in slot 1 and 2 and the 6TB drive(s) are in 3 or 3 and 4. They both have ATI Radeon 5770 cards. Both are plugged into Ethernet networks and do not have wireless turned on.

There are some differences too. The server has a number of external RAID boxes connected via an ESATA card. The other computer has nothing in the PCI-E slots. The server has an after market replacement DVD and the graphics machine has its stock DVD drive. The server machine runs OS X Server.app.

I have a number of resources at my disposal so I plan to do some further testing. That said, I don't have everything to be really thorough and would love some help from others whom are either experiencing this or just want to help. Here is what I don't know and would like to test.

I have in my world Mac Pros that I can test at different customer locations. I can test a 1,1 easily, and I can also test a 3,1 and 4,1. I have those all available in my direct control right now. What I don't have is a 5,1 2010 model, but I can borrow one to test. I can also procure another 6TB HGST drive. What I don't have is a WD 6TB or other brand. I would love to know if this is specific to HGST or if it is a general problem for 6TB drives, Also, for that matter, I would love to see if this happens with 5TB drives. Has anyone else installed a HGST or WD 6TB and had mounting problems?

It would also be great to know if this issue is independent of OS. I plan to test 10.6, 10.8, and 10.10. Of course on the 1,1 Mac Pro I can't test past 10.7. I also would like to know if it matters that a 2TB drive is present and even if that drive is a Toshiba or other brand and even the quantity of drives and their slot position. I hazily remember trying to move drives around in slots when I first encountered this problem. I also wonder if different models of the 6TB drive may behave differently (i.e. NAS versus Enterprise).

I plan to post my results when I am done with the testing.

I had forgotten about this thread, but was reminded of the issue last night, when I moved a 6TB HGST NAS drive from an external enclosure to one of the bays in my 2010 Mac Pro. Sure enough, the drive only mounted after a shutdown and startup, but not on restart. The one twist that I discovered was that when I booted from my Snow Leopard drive, the 6TB drive did mount after a restart. So this seems like yet another thing that only became a problem with OS versions after Snow Leopard. Sigh.

So the HGST has gone back into its OWC enclosure, and a new 6TB Toshiba has been installed inside the Mac. It is mounted on one of the OWC sleds for big drives. The sled works, but it seems a tad more fiddly to slide in than the stock sleds.

I doubt that this will ever get resolved. The workaround seems to be to use drives other than the HGST NAS drives for use inside the Mac.

Thanks for reporting this, I wish, as many more I see,..I heard of this before.

So the HGST 6Tb must be the only drive that has a problem with MP 5.1?

Most of you report the 6Tb NAS, but I found a problem with HUS726060ALE614

As others stated, OWC is selling these, strange they didn't go public!

https://eshop.macsales.com/item/HGST/0F23021/

However my problem is slightly different from yours;

The user I was trying to help, bought these drives on my advise, I really like the HGST's/Ultrastar/Enterprise models and found a really good deal.

So he arrived with these drives, no problem I said,..I'll format them and also install the two flashblades SM951's..1x AHCI and 1x NVMe... AHCI is getting hard to find!

I cloned the system to the AHCI and booted just fine,...also the HGST's showed just fine

(I already formatted them before, using the SSD).

But when my mouse reached for the 6Tb....'poefff' and magically they dissappeared!! 😮😮

Never seen, nor heard anything like this before.

Could not find any related isssue, but ONE remark about an SSD not being able to hot reboot HGST 6Tb, only cold start.

But strangely that is not the case with my patient!

I have the problem only with the flashblades.

I was not able to fix it.

It was either the SSD, plus the 6Tb /HGST/0F23021/...or the flashblades and 4Tb Toshiba's

So I abandonded the flashblades, the user is in need of 6Tb drives.

I made a back-up clone, partitioned on 1 of the 6Tb, and there I found the problem you describe of the back-up clone not mounting...I heard the start-up sound of the MP 5.1, but no picture.

Hard reset and reboot did show the disks again.

Maybe it will help anybody else trying the same thing with flashblades combined with HGST 6Tb.

I have 2x 2010 5,1 Mac Pro's, both booting off Crucial M550 512GB SSD's, one of which is connected by an OWC Accelsor S PCI card, the other using a sled into the first drive bay.

I recently purchased 2x WD 4TB Black HD's, one for each Mac Pro, and both drives will not mount from a Restart, but mount fine if I Shut Down and then Boot.

One of the WD HD's has been replaced with a new one under warranty, as I initially thought it was a bad drive.

So I have actually had this same issue from 3x HD's on 2x Mac's.

Both Mac's are running Mac OS Sierra.

So the problem is not limited to 6TB drives.

I cannot offer any solution or reason for why this is happening, but hopefully someone will find this information useful.

I tend to agree that it is not all 4TB drives, but this post is the only one I have so far found that describes the same symptoms I am having, save for the HD capacity of 6TB instead of my 4TB.

And the problem could well be caused by something completely different, but I am grasping at straws a little to work out exactly how to resolve the problem.

BTW: the 4TB drives were replacing 2TB drives, as more space was needed.

More detailed specs:

Except for the Accelsor S PCI Card in 1x Mac both Mac are virtually identical:

Mid 2010, 2x 2.93GHz 6 Core, 56GB RAM (6x 8GB and 2x 4GB ECC DDR3),

Crucial M550 SSD (running OS Sierra)

1x 1TB Seagate (disk2s2),

1x 2TB Seagate (disk1s2)

and the new 4TB WD Black (disk3s2) - I have tried this drive in drive bay 1 (closest to front of machine), 2 and 4.

I also have a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB plugged into the 2nd optical bay on one machine which I use as as scratch disk for Photoshop.

Running ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphic cards and, apart from the Accelsor, no other PCI cards are installed.

I have an Apple (USB) Keyboard and Mouse and a Wacom Intuos Pro plugged in and nothing else in the USB or FW ports.

Both Macs have had a clean re-install of Mac OS Sierra 10.12.1 a day or two before installing the WD 4TB HD's.

I have tried Disk Utility Erase and Disk Utility Partition to format the drives.

The problem is repeatable every time I re-boot on both Mac's

I appreciate your interest.

It wasn't my intent to hi-jack this thread, but if anyone can offer a possible solution, I am happy to hear it.

PS: When I get a spare minute (hopefully by the end the this week) I might try removing the Crucial SSD from the equation, by physically removing it, and install MacOS on the 1TB Seagate HD and see what happens - I will let you know the results. Other than that I am stumped as to what to do...

Nov 30, 2016 7:05 PM in response to kahjot

Not all 4TB drives have a problem. My config is:

HGST HDS724040ALE640 (4TB 7.2K Hitachi, have two)

WDC WD2001FASS-00U0B0 (2TB WD Black)

OWC Mercury Accelsior PCIe SSD (240GB Accelsior E2 PCIe)

All the above never had a problem restarting. Then I added:

WDC WD80EFZX-68UW8N0 (8TB WD Red)

and now I do have a problem restarting - the WD Red is not seen. Works fine from cold boot.

Nov 30, 2016 10:04 PM in response to mactilda

I have just tried installing Mac OS Sierra 10.12.1 (current at time of post) on an internal (Seagate) 2TB HDD and physically removed ALL SSD's from my system.

This has made no difference to my situation of my WD Black 4TB HHD not appearing on a Re-Boot, but mounting just fine if I Shut Down and then Boot.

Though it is beyond my level of knowledge to say how much faster, if any, a 7200PRM 2TB HDD reached full speed compared to a 7200RPM 4TB HDD, to me this nullifies the claim of SSD's booting too fast, before the older style HDD's can spin up to speed.

I guess this also removes the chance of the problem being from 3rd party software as there was none present for my test.
