Q: Airport Extreme Setup Problem

I keep getting this error message when trying to setup a new Airport Extreme: "An unexpected error occurred. Try again." Same problem in Airport Utility on my iMac or on my iPad from wifi. Any ideas?

Airport Extreme 802.11ac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

I will leave it someone else to figure out what the problem was.

McAfee.....which you do not need on a Mac.....was blocking normal network communications between two Mac devices. Why, I cannot say.  McAfee Support might have an answer for you on that one.

Will having wifi signals from both my router (2.4 and 5) and Extreme cause problems?

Normally, this is not a problem.

At the same time as I tried to reconnect to my broadband the diagnostic checker asked me to turn off my McAfee security.

If you are using McAfee Internet Security on your Mac it includes a software firewall. Like Bob has commented, that firewall is, most likely, why the AirPort Utility was not able to communicate with your AirPort base stations.

The McAfee was supplied by BT as part of their Broadband service so I just loaded it up.

Why don't I need it on my Mac?  If not I will just switch it off.

Thanks again Bob and Tesserax for your help.

If you needed something like McAfee, then Apple would build it into the Apple operating system. On a Mac, anti-virus applications do more harm than good. McAfee.....or another anti-virus application like it.....would be needed if you own a PC.
