Q: How to prevent a contact from going to Junk Mail?

I have an important contact that keeps getting sent to Junk.  It is a contact thru gmail or live.com (I can't remember which) that I use in Apple Mail.  I've tried to remove them by pulling to my inbox, adding them to my contacts to no avail.  Any thoughts?

Regards,
Matt

    Hello Matt,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I see where you are having mail from a particular contact being sent to the Junk mailbox. Given what you have indicated you have tried already, I have a couple of suggestions for you.

First, you can adjust your Junk Mail filtering so that it isn't sent to the Junk mailbox, but rather to have it marked, but left in your inbox. See the first three steps in the following article:

iCloud: Keeping the Junk folder consistent between iCloud Mail and OS X Mail - Apple Support

Alternatively, you can set up a mail rule for this contact that will send mail from this contact to it's own mailbox or folder. See the following article to set up a mail rule:

Mail (Yosemite): Use rules to manage your inbox

    Regards

OS X junk mail processing was pretty weak in my experience, I ended up adding more and more rules to deal with the spam.  I gave up on that approach, and bought and am using SpamSieve, and that can whitelist contacts.  FWIW.

    Thanks for your comments guys.

I tried Jeffd55's first approach and it ...simply...didn't...work.  I don't understand why.  This would be an OK resolution.
The second suggestion is no better than my current-I just check Junk Mail daily.

MrHoffman's suggestion may be valid, but why should I pay for something that should be a standard feature that works. Isn't apple one of the biggest companies in the world?  Should mail be so complicated?  Seriously...

One option would be to create a new mailbox and title it for the Contact.  Next create a rule that will send the email to that mailbox.  See if that will override the contact getting getting send to the Junk mailbox.

To easily see the new email create a smart mailbox with the criteria: Mail is unread.

If you have that particular contact in the Contacts application on your computer, check your settings in the Mail application. If set to exclude contacts from Junk filtering, then it should not be put in the junk mailbox.

Another possibility is that it is your email provider that is actually marking it as spam. If the junk message is brown, then it is the Mail application marking as Junk. If it is not brown, it is your provider. Check the webmail site of your provider for spam filtering there and unmark as junk at their site.

Old Toad, I appreciate your idea, but it's simply unreasonable that I would need to go to such measures to remove a sender from junk.

Glenn, your last statement is likely the case, I will look into that-hadn't considered it!!!

It is a contact thru gmail or live.com

Have you checked with each of them to see if they are assigning "junk" status to that particular contact?

What I suggested was just a workaround until it the issue could be corrected.

Yes, if they aren't brown, then it will be your provider marking them as spam. Another indication your provider marks a message as Junk is that you will not get the option in Mail to mark it as Not Junk. You only get that option when the Mail application marks it as Junk.

This has been happening a good bit to me in the past month with AT&T.

You can tell Mail to ignore what the email provider says and just let Mail be in control. Open Mail>Preferences>Junk Mail and set the final 2 options thus:
