With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:

    • what device are you wanting to edit on, i.e. a Mac oe mobile device?  You've posted your question in the iPhoto for iOS forum which is form mobile devices.
    • what system are you running?
    • how do you have your photos organized, i.e. which application, if any, are you using to manage your photos?

The general answer to your question is to use a image editor.  However, unless you provide us with more details that's about all we can provide.

My first post was incomplete.  What I need to learn is, with my photos in iPhoto on my MacAir, how do I add captions to each photo?

Do you want to add them onto the image itself or under the thumbnail, i.e. Title field, for each photo?

In order to add the text onto the image itself you'll need to use a 3rd party image editor that handles text.

Some Image Editors That Support layers:

    Photoshop Elements 11 for Mac - $79

    GraphicConverter - $40
    Rainbow Painter - $30
    Imagerie - $38
    Acorn - $50

    Pixelmator - $60

    Seashore - Free

    GIMP for Mac - Free

You can set the editor to be used from within iPhoto by selecting it as the external editor in iPhoto's Advanced preference pane:

There's also a free watermarking extension for iPhoto, BorderFX, that will add text to an image during the export process.

A last method would be to use the annotation feature in Preview.

With photos in iPhoto on my MacAir, how do I enter captions in the title field under each photo---not within the image that requires other software?

Confirm for us that you're using iPhoto and not the new Photos app that comes with Yosemite.

With photos in iPhoto on my MacAir, how do I enter captions in the title field under each photo

With iPhoto all you need to do is click once on the Title field (by default  the file name will be in that field) under the thumbnail and begin typing in the title you want to use.

If you're using Photos then post back because that requires a different approach.
