EFI firmware update won't install (HT201518) on Yosemite

Per About the security content of Mac EFI Security Update 2015-001 - Apple Support

I can't install b/c it complains that I'm on 10.10.4 so it exits w/o proceeding.

So how then do I install the EFI/SMC firmware update?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

How come it is not required to run the latest firmware on a more recent OS?

For example if the firmware installed is Boot ROM Version: MM61.010B.B00 and it yet Mac still does not allow for any way of updating, even if the current one is MM61.0106.B0A (2015-002)?

Also, what I stumbled upon: https://duo.com/blog/the-apple-of-your-efi-mac-firmware-security-research

I will be thankful for any help.
