iMessage trouble logging in MacBook Pro

I just got a new MacBook Pro and iMessages was working fine for a few days. I could not get FaceTime to work though and, in trying to fix it, I think I changed something in my settings for iMessage because now I can't get logged in. I have tried signing out and signing in again with my AppleID but it remains offline. My iPhone messages are still working fine (thankfully). Please help me figure out what I must have done!

Thanks for the quick response! However, I already found this page and it didn't help. I definitely have an internet connection and there are no errors in my email address or AppleID. I have not and do not want the two-step verification at this time and I am not dealing with a firewall. (The firewall thing may be an issue when I return to work from this conference though.) Any other suggestions?
