on iMac 10.6.8 there is and circle with a triangle that appears next to inbox. When I click on the stamp, the page comes up empty. So all past emails have disappeared and no new emails are there.

Did you send this message via the same machine? If so, the likelihood is that your account needs resetting. Talk to your internet provider, they may have made unannounced changes.
Try rebuilding the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.
What does Mail/Window/Connection Doctor Show? If the server is red, select it and look at the Show Details box.
