Q: Not Solved:  2013 MBA hangs on boot-up, then reboots. Encryption related.

This 2013 MBA hangs on boot-up, then reboots. Your thoughts? Please let me know if additional information would be helpful.

Symptoms:

With FileVault Encryption on, it hangs when booting, and then reboots. It pauses for about 5-10 seconds prior to rebooting. It does not happen every time. But, I can make it happen if I change the wallpaper when used without the monitor, shut down, attach monitor (Apple), and reboot. If encryption is off, it does not exhibit the problem.

System:

  Model Name:                       MacBook Air

  Model Identifier:                   MacBookAir6,2

  Processor Name:                Intel Core i7

  Processor Speed:               1.7 GHz

  Number of Processors:       1

  Total Number of Cores:       2

L2 Cache (per Core):           256 KB

  L3 Cache:                            4 MB

  Memory:                              8 GB

  Boot ROM Version:             MBA61.0099.B19

  SMC Version (system):       2.13f15

OSX 10.10.04, all updates installed. Yosemite was installed on a clean drive, not over a prior OS.

Console Info:

I get the following 5 crash reports after each boot-up. But, the crash reports are generated EVEN WHEN IT DOES NOT HANG ON BOOT-UP. They occur in this order:

I should add info about my prior attempts to solve the problem.

I have rebooted in safe mode and used the disk utility to repair permissions.

In regular mode, I have used disk utility to repair disk (it doesn't indicate there are any problems).

The cache folders in the three libraries have been cleared.

PRAM and SMC has been reset.

I think that's it. Problem continues.

The issue is NOT SOLVED, in spite of my accidental indication that it is.

    Thanks.

Turn off FileVault2 and boot into Local Recovery and try to re-install OSX. Turn on FV2 and test.

If that does not address the issue. can you OS X: Installing OS X on an external volume - Apple Support and boot from a clean install? This would need to be done using Internet Recovery - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support ?

When was the last time there was clean boot? What OSX updates were applied to the Mac?

    Hello Loner,

Thanks for the reply. I did a clean install of everything (OS X et al) onto an empty drive about a month ago. I did not use FileVault again until a few weeks after that. So, essentially I performed your first suggestion. The install was performed by creating an external install drive, again to a clean, formatted drive. All OS X updates available to the present time have been applied.

Not sure what you're describing here:

If that does not address the issue. can you OS X: Installing OS X on an external volume - Apple Support and boot from a clean install?

Is that essentially booting from an external drive with a clean OS?

After FV2 was enabled, did it complete successfully?

    Yes.

Some of the services are not being started correctly. Have you had any software update failures?

After I enabled FV2, it seemed to work alright for a day or so. Then the problem returned. Since it hasn't been a problem on every boot-up, I'm not sure if it was actually better.

I haven't had any software update failures.

    Thanks

Are you using your Photos as wallpaper which are also synced to iCloud? If yes, use a local wallpaper and test.

Yes, I checked, and iCloud photo synch is checked. And yes, I was using my own photos for wallpaper. Interesting idea.

To test this fully I will need to turn encryption back on. I had turned FileVault off earlier today.

    Thanks

You can test with FV2 off and then turn it back on, which can take a while and once it is complete, test it again. Once these succeed or fail, we can revisit the iCloud part.

OK, turning off iCloud for photos, I get 2 crash reports (instead of 4 or 5). The machine boots without interruption, as it seems to consistently do with FV off. The reports are below. iCloud is still involved in some way.

Ignore the second crash report. The fmfd is what we need to address. Is the Apple ID for your account that you login with different from the iCloud Apple ID used? Mac is unable to create a file in the following directory. Can you check the following from a Terminal window?

    cd ~/Library/Caches//com.apple.icloud.fmfd/

    $ ls -lt

    total 304

    -rw-r--r--@ 1 MyName  staff  49472 Jul 16 22:07 Cache.db-wal

    -rw-r--r--@ 1 MyName  staff  32768 Jul 12 07:32 Cache.db-shm

    -rw-r--r--@ 1 MyName  staff  69632 Jul 11 10:38 Cache.db

As a test copy the contents of /Users/JeffreyPhD/Library/Caches/com.apple.icloud.fmfd to your desktop, then delete it and try again.

Can you run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions? Please also see boot in Safe mode - Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support  - and then boot normally and test.
