Q: Notes not syncing from Mac to iCloud

My Notes app on my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012, running OS X 10.10.3) doesn't seem to be syncing with iCloud. The notes on my iPhone show up in iCloud and vice versa, but there seems to be no uploading or downloading between the computer and iCloud.

I originally had my notes syncing through my Gmail account. When I tried using iCloud for notes instead, I was prompted to create an iCloud.com email address. I did so, and now I can turn on the Notes switch on both my computer and my iPhone. My Gmail address is still my primary email address for iCloud (the one I sign in with), but the new iCloud.com address shows up on both devices as an alternate, and I no longer get the prompt to create an iCloud.com address when I flip the switch on either device.

I moved all my notes from the Gmail folder to the iCloud folder on my computer, but they just won't show up on iCloud.com or on my phone. Also, a new note I created on my phone does show up on iCloud.com but not my computer.

I've tried flipping the iCloud "Notes" switches on and off on both devices to no avail — I can't seem to jumpstart a sync of my notes between my computer and iCloud. Any ideas? Sorry if this question has been asked and answered; I tried Googling the issue.

This is the best answer! Of cuz!!! I have 10.10.5 on my mac and 9.1 beta on my phone. Apparently Mac OS version of Notes app should be latest for the correct  syncing with the actual iOS version. It is very strange behavior of Apple... Im not going to use El Capitan anytime soon, so i can't use Notes app sync anymore?

When you opened Notes for the first time, there was an entire screen which explained what the iOS 9 upgrade to Notes would do, and that once upgraded, they would not sync to a Mac that was not running El Capitan or to another iOS device that wasn't running iOS 9. You had an option to Update Later or Update Now.

Had you selected Update Later, you would then see your old Notes app with a little option to Update in the upper right-hand corner.

So, the behavior is not strange at all. This iOS update got the Notes upgrade first, then the Mac will get the upgrade with its OS X update.

Not sure if there is any way to go back to the previous version and I haven't seen anything about how to do it, if there is. You probably want to call Apple Support about this to see if you can reverse the update.

    Cheers,

This thread spans two iOS releases. Can you provide your current information - what iOS are you running? And, if you are running iOS 9, did you upgrade Notes to the new Notes app? If you did, then your notes will no longer sync with your Mac until you have upgraded to El Capitan. They also will not sync with any device that is not running iOS 9.

Hi again, Gail! I'm ducking into the conversation again. I realized I had been participating the iOS 9 Beta Program by the time of my original post, and I believe I probably had updated to the newest Notes app version, too. But would that affect the notes on my Mac syncing with notes on iCloud.com? Shouldn't that process happen independently of iOS?

According to the iOS 9 Notes support page, Notes on Mac will not sync to iOS 9 notes until El Capitan comes out on September 30, 2015.  The page recommends using iCloud.com until that time.  Before you upgrade your notes - Apple Support

I'm not sure, but it seems logical that they both would sync with iCloud, doesn't it? Here's what the "Learn More" on the upgrade pages for Notes says:

You can't view your upgraded Notes on devices with iOS 8.4 or OS X 10.10.4 or earlier. Also, any notes you create or edit on those devices won't appear on devices with upgraded notes.

So, I went ahead and upgraded my Notes on my iPhone 5. Then I tested and saw the following results:

Notes on Mac showed on Mac and my iOS 8 Device

Notes on iOS 8 Device showed on iOS 8 Device and Mac

Notes on iCloud showed on iCloud and iOS 9 Device

Notes on iOS 9 Device showed on iOS 9 Device and iCloud

So, looks like the Mac and iOS 8 device are still syncing with each other through iCloud, but not showing the actual note it is syncing between the two in iCloud

And, iCloud and the iOS 9 device are syncing via iCloud and displaying in iCloud

So, now, it appears, we know....

Have been a Mac user for 30 years now. But for the first time I suggest we us a Microsoft app OneNote.

Sorry but the note issues have wasted too much of my time.

Not sure if you are referring to the upgraded notes on iOS 9 compatibility, or another issue?

The compatibility is not really an "issue", just a staggered implementation. One does not have to do the Upgrade to the new Notes app when iOS 9 is installed. I held off with the plan to not upgrade it until I upgraded my Mac to El Capitan. But decided to go ahead with it last night so I could answer Rob's question.

For me, not a big deal. If I want a note on my iOS 9 device, I'll add it via iCloud.com....

But are you referring to that, or do you have a different issue?

I don't like the new Apple policy. That all means, that iOS 8 and iOS 9 - incompatible and the same situation with Yosemite and El Capitan. Furthermore, if you once opened your Photos library in El Capitan - you will can't open it in Yosemite anymore.

I have installed El Capitan beta on the other HDD on my mac, after I went to the new system i tried to open Photos app using photo library from Yosemite. It has opened with no prob, but when i came back to Yosemite, Photos didn't want to open photo library! It said "library corrupted or incompatible"

Well, since you are running a beta software version, you have no way to determine if what you are seeing is the way it is supposed to work, or if it is an issue with the beta. And certainly making pronouncements about how things will work under El Capitan without having that knowledge, is simply misleading and unsubstantiated.

Not to mention, that when you agreed to run the Beta software, you agreed to not discuss anything about it in public forums, That includes any speculation you might have about behavior you  are seeing and why you think you are seeing that behavior.

Please refrain from stating anything about your beta experience on this forum, and especially, refrain from making statements that are drawn from your own experience using a piece of software that is in a beta state. Nothing you see may turn out to be the way it will really be when the final version is released....

    Best of luck,
