Portrait photos appear as landscape in screensaver - how to change?

This seems to be a fairly recent problem. I use photos from iPhoto as my screensaver, changing every 20 seconds. Although portrait photos appear properly in iPhoto, they show in landscape in the screensaver, no matter which setting I use. Can this be remedied?
