how do i fix error (-1)

I was trying to completely reset my iphone 4s with itunes using the itunes version for older graphics cards and the bar on the phone would get all the way to the end on the phone and then stop. i was getting the error "The iphone "iphone" could not be restored. An unknown error has occurred (48)." I tried this at least 10 times with the same result. I tried at least another 10 times in dfu mode. I also tried several times downloading the ipsw file and pressing shift+restore to select the ipsw file. I deleted the ipsw file in c:/users/username/app data/roaming/apple computer/itunes/iphone software updates/ and downloaded again. I did this at least another 10 times. i've checked all the ipsw files md5 sums to make sure they were correct and they were.

I have repeated this process on 2 seperate windows computers about the same number of times. I have also used 2 different iphone cables with the same result. I then completely removed and uninstalled all itunes files and installed the latest 64 bit itunes program. i have tried the restore several more times in restore mode and dfu mode. now i am getting "The iphone "iphone" could not be restored. An unknown error has occurred (-1)."

I'm at a complete loss. I've been up for over 36 hours now searching online for a solution but to no avail. Is this thing bricked? please help.

How did this happen though? The phone worked fine until I went to restore it. I restored it about a month ago and haven't touched it since. So the hardware failed while it's been powered off and just sitting there not in use? This just seems really strange to me. Do you know which piece of hardware it could be? I read about people having this problem with the iphone 5 and they opened it up and took a hairdryer to it and it started working again. I'm pretty good with soldering so if I know what piece needs replacing I can probably do it.

It's impossible to say exactly what happened. Could have been cosmic rays, condensation of moisture inside the phone, any number of things.

If you attempt to open it yourself, you will forfeit all rights to service or support either here or from Apple. The iPhone is not user serviceable and Apple does not sell iPhone parts.

Make an appointment at the genius bar of your local Apple Store and take it in for an out of warranty replacement.

Thank you for your replies however I'm not going to do that. This is my dad's old phone. He gave it to me for free and I was just trying to get it to work for my daughter. Enough ranting though. thank you again. someone was saying this error can happen when the phone was jailbroken and redsnow can get past this error code. redsnow does not support 8.4 however so i'll do some more searching, wait, or give up.

Not enough editing, you needed to take out the part about shipping jobs overseas.

Taiwan has also had labor issues and more of their phones are made in China than Taiwan. You will have to check the serial number before you purchase.

Apple is the only manufacturer that has independent watchdog groups now monitoring the factories/companies they contract with and the incidents you mentioned were some time ago. There have also been other incidents with other companies but since Apple is the 800 pound gorilla they get the press coverage.
