Can you have the watch turned off and charge it?

I had the watch on the charger and was not able to power off the device. I've found that I'm only able to turn the device off when it is not charging? Is it not possible to power the watch completely off and charge it?

Apple Watch, watchOS 1.0.1

No, it's not. Even if you turn it off, it will turn back on when you put it on the charger. But, there's no harm in having it on.
