I upgraded to yosemite and have a problem with safari 8.0.5. when I'm in google news and go a an article I cannot go back, the back arrow is greyed and the cirlcle red x closes down Safari. I used to be able to hit the red x after looking at an article and it would bring me back to the google news homepage.
I have a macbook pro
Update Safari to 8.0.7. Open the App Store then select Updates from the menu top of the App Store window.
Then restart your Mac and try Safari.
If you still can't get back to the previous page, it might be a cookies, cache, extensions, or plug-ins issue.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click: Remove All Website Data
Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, from the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

I solved problem by going into preference: in Tabs I changed the setting "open pages in tabs" NEVER. I also changed the view to show favorites bar. BTW I did upgrade
